Written exams
Some airlines ask pilots to pass a written exam before a promotion or before a type rating checkride. Exams are multiple choice and are taken on the website.
Taking an exam
- Open My flights → Exams. Each exam shows what it is needed for (a promotion, or a type's checkride), how many questions it has, the pass mark and any time limit.
- Press Start. The questions and their answers come in a random order, different each time.
- Pick one answer for each question and press Send my answers. You see your score and whether you passed straight away.
Good to know:
- One attempt at a time. If you leave the page, Continue on the Exams page takes you back to the same attempt.
- The time limit is the server's. The clock starts when you press Start and keeps running if you close the page. Answers that arrive after the time is up count as a failed attempt.
- Retakes. After a failed attempt your airline may ask you to wait some days. The Exams page says from when you can try again.
- The page shows your score, not which answers were right.
- Your attempts lists every exam you've taken, with the score.
What an exam unlocks
- A rank. You're promoted to the rank only once you've passed its exam, even if your hours and points are already enough. The ranks above it wait too. The Ranks page tells you when an exam is all that's left. Pilots who already held the rank when staff added the exam keep it. See Ranks and points.
- A type rating. You pass the exam before you can start or request that type's checkride. Ratings you already hold stay.
For staff
Turn on Written exams (Airline settings → Optional features). Staff who manage type ratings write exams on Staff → Operations → Exams; examiners can see the attempts there too.
- Press New exam. Give it a title, a pass mark (in percent), an optional time limit in minutes, and how many days a pilot waits after a failed attempt.
- Write the questions in the Questions box: one block per question with an empty line between blocks. The first line is the question; each line after it is an answer, 2 to 6 of them. Start the correct answer with
*. Up to 50 questions. - Optionally tie it to a rank (Needed for promotion to) or to a rated type (Needed before the checkride on).
- Leave Open ticked and press Save the exam.
When you tie an exam to a rank, every pilot who holds that rank (or a higher one) at that moment keeps it without the exam. Untick Open to hide an exam: nothing waits for it while it is closed. Every attempt lists all attempts, by exam or by pilot (click a pilot's name).
