Training with instructors
Some airlines have instructors who give training sessions: on an aircraft type, for a rank, or on a topic such as network procedures. You book a time an instructor offers, or ask for training when none fits.
Booking a session
- Open My flights → Training. Open slots lists the times instructors offer, with the type or topic and the length. Times are UTC.
- Press Book. Each slot is for one pilot: if someone else booked it a moment before you, you're told and the slot is gone.
- The session moves to Your sessions. Add to calendar downloads it as a calendar file, and it also appears in your calendar feed.
Good to know:
- You can have up to 3 sessions booked at a time.
- Cancelling. You can cancel a booking up to 2 hours before it starts; the slot opens again for other pilots. Closer to the start, ask your instructor.
- You only see the slots of instructors who look after pilots of your hub.
Asking for training
When no slot fits, use Ask for training: choose a type or write a topic (or both), add a note such as when suits you, and press Send the request. Instructors are told. When one picks it up, you get a notification with the time, and the session appears under Your sessions. You can have up to 3 requests waiting at a time, and cancel one while it waits.
After the session
Your instructor logs how it went: completed, no-show or cancelled, with a note to you. You get a notification, and the session goes to Training history on your Training page and your profile (only you and staff who look after your record see it).
If the instructor marks you ready for the checkride on a type, and your airline has checkrides with an examiner, the Training page points you to Type ratings, where you ask for the checkride as usual. See Ranks and points. Some airlines also ask for a written exam first.
For staff
Turn on Training with instructors (Airline settings → Optional features) and give instructors a staff role with Instruct training (it is in the Pilots & HR preset). A role limited to some hubs only reaches pilots of those hubs. Instructors work on Staff → Operations → Training:
- Offer a slot: the start (UTC), the length in minutes, and optionally a type, a topic and a note for pilots. Pilots are told when one books it.
- Requests from pilots: give a request a start and length and press Pick up. The pilot is told.
- Upcoming slots and sessions: cancel one you can't make; a pilot who booked it is told, and a request it came from waits for another instructor.
- Log how it went: once a session has started, choose the outcome, write a note to the pilot and, for a type, tick Ready for the checkride if they are. The pilot is told.
The pilot's training history is also on their staff pilot page. Every slot, pick-up, cancellation and outcome is in the activity log.
